He was early today, the Baker. But, through luck, they’d been prepared, watching from across the railway tracks having arrived early. People took their dogs across the railway all the time to the swing bridge and the river. People who collected their dog’s crap and bagged it up only to leave it on the path as if to say, ‘Ooh, look how good we are, now clear it up.’

People could be arseholes.

Some people could be monsters.

Like Royston Moyles… and his friends. The Baker for one.

But today, seeing all the police around, buzzing in and out in their patrol cars, parked in the Co-op car park, had been a pain. A close call. But it changed nothing. They knew the Force was stretched. The police could not be everywhere. And they only needed the right moment, one moment, to do what needed to be done.

At the end of the southbound platform, they’d found a spot where they could sit and wait and watch. The police wouldn’t find them here. They’d dressed for the weather, or at least for what the weather might be in a part of the world where you could get four seasons in one day. But that added to the charm of this part of the world. There was CCTV in the station, but they’d avoided that. The crossing, to the north of the platforms, was simply some wooden planking laid to ensure no one tripped over proud rails. It still left gaps for the unwary paw or stiletto.

That didn’t bother them. No stilettos. At least none that you wore on your feet.

They watched as the Baker walked to the steps that led up to the town. He’d be out for thirty minutes. That was his routine. Could be longer today. But it all offered an opportunity.

They knew how long it took to climb the stairs and how long – a little less – to climb down. They’d timed it half a dozen times. Now they waited an extra thirty seconds to be sure and went south along the paths to a place where the CCTV lost coverage. They took an underpass beneath the railway and a lane that emerged onto Crescent Road. There they took off the ski mask but kept the hood and ambled back towards Latimer Road to keep watch.

It didn’t matter how long the Baker might be. They had all the time in the world.
